Na FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, encontra-se aberto concurso para a atribuição de 2 Bolsa(s) de Iniciação à Investigação (BII) no âmbito do projeto/instituição de I&D CIUHCT - Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia - UI0286 - apoio especial Verão com Ciência 2022, financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P./MCTES através de fundos nacionais (PIDDAC) no âmbito do Apoio especial para atividades de investigação científica e tecnológica em unidades de I&D. As vagas são para auxiliar na fase final do Projeto AQUA, nomeadamente a organização da conferência final e gestão de conteúdos do site do projeto.



Pier Luigi Pireddu (AQUA Project) will attend the Summer School in Budapest at the Central European University (CEU) from 11 to 22 July. The title of the course is "The History and Philosophy of the Concepts of Scientific Law and Probability", a course that is part of the History and Philosophy of Science subject area, within the University's Philosophy Department. It is a course taught by internal and external lecturers, especially external scholar from USA.



The "AQUA - HORTO AQUAM SALUTAREM - Efficient Use of Water in Gardens of the Modern Age" Project Team, with the support of FCT, invites you to attend the July edition of the Advanced Training Seminar on Gardens, Landscapes and the Environment, which will be held on July 11, at 3pm, online - zoom. The aim is to present "The Battle for Water: Violence and the Culture of War in Princely Gardens of the Renaissance and the Baroque". Denis Ribouillault gives the presentation.

Denis Ribouillault is Professor of Early Modern Art History and Graduate Program Director at the Université de Montréal, Canada, specializing in cultural landscape and garden studies. He has been a fellow at the Villa Medici-Académie de France in Rome, at Villa I Tatti (Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence) and Dumbarton Oaks (Harvard, Washington D.C.). He is the author of numerous articles and a monograph on the villas and gardens of Renaissance Rome (Rome en ses jardins. Paysage et pouvoir au XVIe siècle, Paris, INHA-CTHS, 2013). He has published two volumes of essays (both with Leo S. Olschki): Sacred Landscape. Landscape as Exegesis in Early Modern Europe (2011, co-authored with Michel Weemans) and De la peinture au jardin (2016, co-authored with Hervé Brunon). He is currently preparing several monographs and edited books, including Gardens and Academies in Early Modern Italy and Beyond (Leiden, Brill) and The Villa Barbaro at Maser. Science, Philosophy and the Family in Venetian Renaissance Art (London, Harvey Miller).

At the Hi-Phi International Conference which took place at the Faculty of Science in Lisbon on 23-24 June, Ana Duarte Rodrigues (as a member of the Scientific/Organizing Committee) held a session entitled 'The Idea of Nature in Herrera's Book of Agriculture (1513)'. Pier Luigi Pireddu, PhD student at the Faculty of Science in Lisbon and member of the AQUA project, also presented a session entitled 'Between "Balance of Nature" and the Ecosystem Concept. A Historical-philosophical Discussion'.

Ana Duarte Rodrigues participated at "In conversation with", series of the Water Cultures Project, from Ca' Foscari University of Venice. This is a series of short filmed conversations between members of the Water-Cultures team and renowned international scholars working in the field. They discuss what drew them to their respective topics, the sources and approaches they use in their research, challenges faced and future directions. David Gentilcore is the Principal Investigator of this European Research Council Project.

Margarita García e Esther Guillén will give the presentation.

Mila Avellar Montezuma is an Architect and Urban Planner (UFPE); Master's student in Climate-Resilient Cities (IHE-UNESCO, TU/Delft, IHS-Erasmus). Vice-President of the International Students Association IHE-UNESCO. Developed projects of adaptability and resilience in the Amazon awarded internationally with the Architectural Association-UK (AA). She published two books on Pandemics, Cities and Climate Change. Researcher at RXH – awarded as International Good Practices. Executive Coordinator of Recife Exchanges on sea level rise in coastal hotspots.



Pier Luigi Pireddu, PhD student and member of AQUA Project, presents at the annual British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) Postgraduate Conference. The title of the presentation is "The Relationship Between George Evelyn Hutchinson and Vladimir Ivanovic Vernadsky: Roots and Consequences of a Biogeochemical Approach".

The international conference was organised by members of the AQUA Project, Ana Duarte Rodrigues and Luís Ribeiro, and also by Henrique Leitão, provost of the University of Lisbon. It also had an Executive Committee, composed by Patricia Monteiro from the AQUA Project.

The Art&Science was attended by over 70 participants throughout a day of work that included keynote presentations by Charles Burnett, Annemarie Jordan and Fernando António Baptista Pereira. The program also included presentations by Samuel Gessner and Šima Krtalić.

ONLINE CONFERENCE LITERATURE, TOURISM, AND WATERSCAPES

Water contains multiple layers of meaning. It is associated with purification, the washing away of sins, rebirth. Water is an emblem of flow, fluidity, movement, transition, change. Water refreshes, regenerates, vitalises. Water is life itself! As such, there is no wonder it has been a symbol in the literary works of all times, appearing in a variety of shapes: ocean, sea, river, lake, waterfall, rain and many more. Water itself travels through time and space and is shaped by tangible and intangible heritage, changing landscapes and the ways we see the world.

However, waterscapes in literature have not been studied much with relation to tourism. And yet they are a significant form of heritage and culture, and a material place as well. This international conference seeks critical thinking on the representations and experiences of waterscapes related to literature and tourism. The conference offers an opportunity to explore the ways waterscapes have been represented in literature and how they attract or can be used as a tourist resource. Despite its main focus on literature, we invite researchers across the social sciences and humanities to provide a multidisciplinary approach to waterscapes and the ways in which they are represented in different cultural contexts.

The conference will take place online on 11-13 April 2022.

The AQUA Project Team - HORTO AQUAM SALUTAREM – Effective Use of Water in Gardens of the Modern Age, with the support of FCT, invites to the October edition of the ‘Seminário de Formação Avançada em Jardins, Paisagens e Ambiente´, held at next October 26th, at 4:30 pm, a guided tour, with the aim of presenting Hortas de Lisboa: from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century. Daniela Araújo and Mário Nascimento lead the presentation. Everyone is invited and participation is free.

UMA DÉCADA DE VIAGEM RUMO A UMA INFRAESTRUTURA VERDE

O Seminário de Formação Avançada em Jardins, Paisagens e Ambiente, organizado pelo Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia, no âmbito do projeto AQUA, tem como objetivo dinamizar os estudos de jardins e paisagem, nomeadamente sobre a perspectiva da história das ciências e da história da água. Este espaço de disseminação de investigações recentes ou de projetos sobre estes temas teve início em janeiro de 2020, com uma periodicidade mensal. As sessões têm variado entre o formato online e presencial devido aos constrangimentos causados pela pandemia. Em junho, a feliz conjugação de uma série de fatores, permitiu-nos realizar um evento presencial no espaço da exposição Jardins Históricos de Portugal. Memória e Futuro que está patente na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. O convidado deste mês é o arquiteto paisagista Duarte d’Araújo Mata, que irá falar sobre «Uma década de viagem rumo a uma infraestrutura verde».

Na FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, encontra-se aberto concurso para a atribuição de 1 Bolsa(s) de Investigação (BI) para aluno de Mestrado no âmbito do projeto/instituição de I&D “HORTO AQUAM SALUTAREM - Uso eficaz da Água nos Jardins da Idade Moderna”, financiado por fundos nacionais através da FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC), nas seguintes condições:

1. Área Científica: História e áreas afins, Arquitetura, Arquitetura Paisagista, Agronomia ou Engenharia Hidráulica. 2. Requisitos de admissão: Grau académico exigido neste edital: Licenciado com ano curricular do Mestrado concluído nas áreas de História e áreas afins, Arquitetura, Arquitetura Paisagista, Agronomia ou Engenharia Hidráulica, e conhecimento de línguas, português e inglês. 3.Fatores preferenciais: Interesse pelas temáticas de História da Ciência e Tecnologia; Jardins e Paisagem, Hidráulica e História da Água e História da Idade Moderna. 4.Plano de trabalhos: Realização de trabalho de arquivo, estudo de bibliografia, tratadística de hidráulica e realização de trabalho de campo sobre um sistema hidráulico de jardins ou cercas da Idade Moderna em Portugal, com vista a apresentá-lo como tese de Mestrado. Enquanto membro da investigação participará igualmente nas demais atividades do projeto AQUA que envolvam todos os membros da equipa.

Ana Duarte Rodrigues' book was launched on May 18th. An edition of the National Library of Portugal and Lisbon Capital Verde European 2020, with support from CIUHCT, FCT, CML and with presentation by Ana Simões (Sciences ULisboa).

O Triunfo dos Jardins – O pelouro dos Passeios e Arvoredos de Lisboa (1840-1900) de Ana Duarte Rodrigues, publicado pela Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal e Lisboa Capital Verde Europeia 2020, cruza-se com o momento vivido pela cidade de Lisboa no presente, precisamente por se encontrar na sua génese, pois foram as sementes - literalmente - lançadas pelos homens que trabalharam no pelouro dos Passeios e Arvoredos da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, durante a segunda metade do século XIX, que deram origem à Lisboa verde, ecológica e sustentável do século XXI.

Tendo tido como ponto de partida a exposição A Biblioteca dos Passeios e Arvoredos, que decorreu na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal entre 21 de setembro e 31 de dezembro de 2017, a história acabou por se alargar a toda a vida do pelouro dos Passeios e Arvoredos num período chave de modernização do país e da renovação urbana de Lisboa sob a égide dos Liberais. Esta investigação prova que na sua agenda não constavam só a construção das infraestruturas da cidade.

A Lisboa moderna tinha de ser verde. O jardim da Estrela foi construído, a avenida da Liberdade foi aberta, o parque da Liberdade foi projetado, e o Campo Grande pensado para ser os pulmões de Lisboa. Este livro conta a história das visões, vontades, e valores dos homens que a partir do pelouro dos Passeios e Arvoredos da CML contribuíram para a transformação de Lisboa numa cidade voltada para o cidadão. Mas também dos livros, das plantas, das ferramentas, das escolas e das festas que numa co-construção entre ciência, tecnologia, artesania e cidade se construiu uma nova maneira de pensar e fazer o espaço público. O livro conta ainda com a apresentação do vereador Sá Fernandes, do pelouro e com o prefácio de Ana Simões.
